Chapter Thirteen

Twelve hours later, I found myself sandwiched between Declan and Ace on the couch, Lucas stood behind the sofa, his hands on my shoulders. A big cup of coffee sat before me, and I sipped it gingerly, feeling the warmth travel through me and the rich flavor fill my senses.

Chad lay on the ground in wolf form—a little ways off from the rest of us. Along with one of Declan’s massive t-shirt and a fresh pair of panties, I wore my leather glove once more and Morgana’s charm necklace on top of my anti-glamour necklace, both of which just felt like heavy pieces of jewelry.

Declan pulled my legs onto his thigh and hoisted me onto his lap.

“Are you sure you don’t want to just tie our bodies together, Declan?” I laughed, even though I definitely wasn’t complaining.

The big guy leaned over to grin down at me. His hand curled around my thigh and squeezed. “Oh, I can think of much more fun ways to connect our bodies, Cherry on top.”

“That nickname…” I groaned and rolled my eyes.

It wasn’t hard to see that even though Declan was smiling and teasing as per usual, his protective instincts had been kicked into overdrive. The massive man had kept his conversations light, but he hadn’t seemed able to let go of me since the shower last night. He’d kept at least one body part in contact with me while we ate, slept, and woke in his bunk, and most of the time he was wrapped entirely around me.

But, as I did with Lucas and Jasper, I curled up closer to him, indulging Declan’s instincts. but at some point, I was going to have to call it enough for one day.

Jasper paced anxiously before us. He’d spent last night patrolling the packhouse like we were under attack.

Maybe we were.

Jasper knew what was on Oliver Hunt’s phone. Twice my alpha offered to tell me what he had read, but I told him that we should all discuss it together as a pack. It involved all of us.

Really, I was just fucking chicken shit and delaying learning what message Oliver Hunt had managed to send out of Grayhaven.

The rigid set of Jasper’s shoulders gave me no comfort. Across the way, Ace and Lucas sat on the dining room table bench, both of their eyes were darting between me and Jasper like ping pong balls.

“The earthquake was magical in nature, but the spell wasn’t intentionally trying to cause an earthquake,” Jasper said. He stopped to cross his arms over his chest. “Last night, it was determined that the demons would investigate the source of the magic as they have the resources, and I’d already accused the witches of causing this. Baumouth and Regina, the demon sect leaders called representatives of all of the supernatural groups together in the early hours of the morning, and Lucas and I attended. What they concluded was the earthquake was cause by Grayhaven itself, reacting to an outside force. Someone is trying to break into Grayhaven with a considerable amount of magic.
